Never Say “Dye”…..
I love recipes that have endless possibilities. Recipes that can be made a hundred different ways. Recipes that scream classic, you are familiar with me, but innovative and different at the same time. I have had a long-time love affair with sweet and sour sauce, but in recent years have tried to avoid it due to its incredibly high sugar content, and artificial colors. While the characteristic sweetness keeps you begging for more, and the bright orange color appeals to our senses it doesn’t have to end like that.
I have made several versions of sweet and sour sauce over the years, but the one I am bringing you today is by far the easiest. It Is ready in under 20 minutes and only uses four ingredients, plus water. And unlike your traditional sweet and sour sauces it actually has health benefits. You can eat something you love and feel good about it. That is my goal with every single recipe, but this recipe is a no brainer when it comes to nutrition. If you use this recipe for 8 servings you are only getting 7 grams of sugar, but you are also getting a whopping 6 grams of fiber! (That is approximately 1 Tablespoon) This may seem to be higher in sugar than the traditional 2 Tablespoons of sweet and sour, but you have juice instead of regular sugar and food coloring. This is still the healthier option.
Sugar 2.0 +Probiotics – You are not just getting 1/3 of the calories you would from regular sugar, but you are also getting prebiotic fiber and probiotics!
POM Wonderful – We all know that pomegranate juice is healthy, but here it not only adds antioxidants to your sweet and sour, but it adds a beautiful color, so you don’t have to use any unnatural dyes.
Raw Apple Cider Vinegar – We add this at the end to try and keep as many of its health properties in tact as we can.
You don’t need a thermometer for this recipe. You don’t need to know anything about candy making, or simple syrup. It is so cut and dry. It is as easy as combining the water, Sugar 2.0+probiotics, and POM juice bringing to a boil, and simmering for 10 minutes. In a small bowl you combine your non-GMO cornstarch and apple cider vinegar, drizzle it in, simmer for 5 more minutes and you are ready to serve. No artificial colors, or ingredients. No corn syrup, or fake sweeteners. Just a few healthy ingredients turned into a healthier classic of an old favorite. Get ready to sit back, relax, and enjoy!

You’ll never believe it, but I was wondering how one would make this. My neighborhood place gives that syrupy sweet pepper goo out of a bottle, and this looks more like the plum sauce I like. 🙂 Debra
