High Protein, Zero Powder…..
Another holiday come and gone, and we are already halfway through 2016! When I was younger I remember hearing “old” people (Pretty sure they were 35 or 40 ;)) say, “The older you get the faster time goes”, being a kid that seemed impossible since time couldn’t go quickly enough for me. Now time is moving at warp speed. Before I know it, I will be writing the same thing and it will be a year later. 😉 Whether time is moving slowly, or fast, for you I hope that everyone had a safe, and “uneventful” 4th of July celebration. 🙂
Now that we have a fairly long stretch until the next holiday I can get back into my routine. Ever since I bought that bag of hemp hearts a few weeks ago I have wanted to do more than just sprinkle it on my morning hot cereal every day. I wanted to put it into something “snacky”, and I was ready for the challenge! I am going to warn you right out of the gate that these are not low calorie, but they are QUALITY calories. These little snacks are packed with protein and fiber, with low carbs and low natural sugar. When I started creating this recipe I was on the protein bar path, which got diverted into “bites”. The mixture was too soft for a bar, but amazing for a bite!
A lot of people might cringe at 125 calories per bite (These are big bites!), but these are whole foods without anything funky. Each bite contains 5.5 grams of easily digestible protein, they have a measly 3 grams of NET carbs, and only 1.5 grams of sugar. Seriously, how can you go wrong with that? If you have ever eaten a packaged protein “treat” you know that these are great macros and you shouldn’t even bat an eye. Would I recommend eating the entire batch? Probably not, but you can rest assured that indulged in a few won’t hurt your waistline, it will help it.
I think that these bites could turn out to be a very versatile jumping off point for an enormous amount of variations, but what I used was simple, to the point, and well rounded. Each ingredient compliments the others, and they work in harmony to give you energy, aid in digestion, and make your taste buds sing! I wouldn’t recommend keeping these on the counter because they will get to soft, but they hold up nicely in the refrigerator. If you like that little extra chill feel free to pop them in the freezer. In the end all 7 ingredients are high quality, nutritious, and delicious, so sit back, relax, and enjoy!

Hemp Heart Bites with Dark Chocolate Chunks

½ cup hemp hearts
2 Tablespoons ground flax meal
½ cup plain uncooked instant oats
¼ cup unsweetened shredded coconut
2 squares dark chocolate – roughly chopped into chunks
3 Tablespoons Sugar 2.0
¾ cup natural crunchy peanut butter (Or any nut, or seed, butter of your choice) (softened)
In a medium bowl whisk together the hemp hearts, flax meal, oats, coconut, chocolate, and Sugar 2.0
Stir in the peanut butter until completely combined
Chill for 30 minutes
Remove from the fridge and make 16 bites tightly packing a 1 Tablespoon cookie scoop with dough
Place on a plate, or container, store in the refrigerator
2 bites = 250 calories
